Take control of aging skin

The secret to turning back the clock has yet to be discovered, but improving the appearance of fine lines,
wrinkles, and boosting natural collagen production are a few ways to take control of aging skin – and maybe stop
that clock from ticking.
Traditionally, rejuvenation has been achieved with a face-lift by surgically tightening the skin. Today, a
multitude of minimally invasive procedures are aimed at rejuvenation without the risk, recovery time, and expense
of major surgery.

Although not as durable as a facelift, dermal fillers have become popular among women and men seeking a younger
look and offer yet another alternative to cosmetic surgery. It is not a new treatment.

Dermal fillers are substances injected into the skin of the face to fill lines and wrinkles, sunken cheeks and weak
chins; also used to reshape noses or lipsin deep folds and wrinkles. They are used mainly for "static" facial
lines and folds, the ones that don't come and go as you change your expression.
They work chiefly as a substitute for lost collagen and fat under the skin. Their results may vary in different
areas of the face, as does the duration of their effect.

Treatment takes 30-60 minutes.
Cost £150-£850 depending on type of filler used and number of syringes.

The dermal filler field is booming because the effects are immediate, the procedure doesn't involve real surgery,
and costs are reasonable.

Types of dermal filler.

They are many kinds of fillers and new ones are coming onto the market every day. Dermal fillers are made from a
variety of materials. They are derived from collagen, some which come from a bovine source and some from a porcine
source. Other fillers are synthetically produced in laboratory and are derived from hyaluronic acid,for example
Restylane, is based on hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance widely used in medicine.
Newer types of filler with other ingredients claim to have a longer lasting effect, but aren't widely available.
Fillers derived from both collagen and hyaluronic acid are temporary biodegradeable products which last 6-9 months
Some of the brand names of temporary fillers include Restylane®, Hydrafill®, Juvederm® and
and Radiesse®.

Who should carry out your dermal fillers procedures

In the UK, dermal fillers are categorised as medical devices, meaning that they do not require a prescription,
although it is recommended that only medically qualified practitioners make use of them .
Dermal filling treatments are offered by many nurses, Cosmetic practitioners, cosmetic doctors, dermatolgists,
plastic surgeons and dentists.

Due to the numerous types of filler available, you should make sure that your practitioner has successfully
completed a training course appropriate for the particular filler that you will be receiving.
Not only that, he/she should be trained in applying the treatment to the specific part of the face that you
require it. 

The outcome

Following the procedure, there may be some redness in the treated areas, though this is usually minimal. Your
face may be a little swollen and tender for a short period.

Normally, patients can leave the clinic a few minutes after the procedure. You can return to work the same day
and resume most activities within four hours.
 
Risk

Avoid dermal fillers if you have active acne, After treatment, allergic reactions sometimes crop up, including
itching, puffiness, and red or bumpy skin. Patients who have had cold sores in the past can suffer an outbreak.
Rarely, red lumps appear under the skin some months after treatment.Around 3% of people are allergic to bovine
collagen,so a skin test is always given to patients being treated with collagen-based fillers.

Results

The treatment starts to work in about 3-5 days, with the greatest effect seen after about 1-2 weeks.
Lines and wrinkles treated should appear smoother and softer, giving a more ‘youthful’ appearance to the face.
