Green Home tips - Eco heating ideas
Autumn is approaching and that means colder days ahead. However, Australia is blessed with an amazingly moderate climate where even our chilliest days are nothing compared to other regions in the world. This means that Australian residents can take advantage of all natural low emissions heating in their green home.
As well as insulation and energy efficiency, there are other innovative heating ideas to keep your home toasty warm for the winter.
Eco Home Tip #31 - Seal up draughts - Put snakes under door jambs, get weather stripping for your windows. Heavy curtains also help keep in the heat and keep out the cold. You'll be amazed at how cosy a room can be without any heating at all.
Eco Home Tip #32 - Look beneath your feet - the soil beneath you home acts as a natural insulator, keeping the ground warm all year round. By employing a geothermal heat pump, your home can be take advantage of this natural heat during the colder months. In a geothermal system, liquid is circulated in pupes that run beneath your home. As the liquid gets warmer, it is pumped up to a heat condensor where the heat is released into your central heating system.
Eco Home Tip #33 - Keep it low - Switch your thermostat down a single degree. When we come in from the cold, we're very likely to crank the termostat up much higher than necessary. Remember that every degree lower on your thermostat can potentially save up to 10 per cent on your heating. Throw on a jumper instead.
Eco Home Tip #34 - Cut your system down to size - as with air conditioning, don't go overboard with your heating. You'll be amazed at what a single space heater will do.
Eco Home Tip #35 - Look for the Energy Star - As with all appliances, energy star ratings give a good indication of the energy efficiency of the appliance. Energy star rates furnaces, boilers and heat pumps for central heating in your home.

Pretty Runs Out $14.38 Only 16 years of age, New Orleans fiddler/songwriter/singer Amanda Shaw makes an impressive debut with Pretty Runs Out, an album that runs a fairly wide gamut of musical styles but never sounds like it comes from anyplace other than her home town. The title track, which opens the album, carries with it a faint whiff of the new wave '80s (there's just a touch of Kate Bush in the melody), and the funky beats and snotty lyrics on "Brick Wall" somehow manage to sound like a French Quarter version of middle-period Talking Heads (with horns and some very greasy guitar). "I Don't Want to Be Your Friend" is a brilliant country-Cajun romantic kiss-off song written by Diane Warren, originally recorded by Cyndi Lauper, and brilliantly performed by Shaw as if it had been written just for her. "French Jig," which is not a jig, is a spare and dry Cajun instrumental with a hint of ska thrown in for extra spice. The album's highlight, though, is a slow-burning song of longing titled "Wishing Me Away"; her double-tracked fiddle solo halfway through is a gem of restrained emotion, and her close-miked vocals are a perfect balance of intimacy and power. Then the album closes with a brilliant Cajun reel set and "Easy on Your Way Out," which sounds for all the world like a parody of pompous 1970s white funk-rock. Not bad for a kid who was born in the early '90s. Highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Mike Barras - Triangle, Drums, Percussion; Annie Clements - Vocals (Background); Sarah Borges - Vocal Harmony, Harmony Vocals, Vocals (Background); Amanda Shaw - Fiddle, Vocals; Cranston Clements - Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic); David Torkanowsky - Organ (Hammond), Piano (Electric); Dirk Powell - Fretless Banjo, Banjo, Guitar (Acoustic); James Martin - Sax (Tenor) |

Until the Ink Runs Out $8.78 Those familiar with Trustkill staples like Poison the Well, Walls of Jericho, or Nora know that the label means business when it comes to presenting some of the most brutally dynamic hardcore in America. No different is Eighteen Visions. Filled with metallic venom, the band attacks with a very loose style of hardcore that's filled with heavy bass riffing, relaxed drumming, and disharmonic guitar squeals. This creates a landscape of sound instead of a tight, technical composition. Mid-paced guitar work, with occasional bursts of enraged speed and blast beats, typify the album, along with a Will Haven-ish vocal style, tongue-in-cheek, socially conscious lyrics, and some scattered slow, melodic vocal parts -- à la Poison the Well. Samples from a TV program with Elvis as well as movies from The Shining to Back to the Future characterize this pop culture obsessed release, as they intertwine effectively with the music. Few bands in this genre own this skill. "Champagne and Sleeping Pills" is a standout track, filled with noisy dynamics that cross Will Haven's sloppy but stylish and inventive playing with PTW's melodic textures. When the tune trails off into a noisy mix of feedback and eerie Kubrick samples, the listener is treated to one of the album's most blissful moments. A close second is the daring "Wine 'Em, Dine 'Em, Sixty-Nine 'Em," with its sludgy pace and bludgeoning European-tinged guitar. Until the Ink Runs Out -- crafty yes, but brilliant no. Eighteen Visions, for all its finer points, still churns out a veritably clichéd hardcore release filled with repetitive riffery and lack of focus. Compared to Poison the Well or any of the other aforementioned metal/hardcore acts, this band sounds young, with tons of room for growth and development. Not a bad release by any means, but simply an album whose creative ink has clearly run dry for the time being. ~ Jason Hundey, Rovi |

Youth Runs Wild $12.78 Although by 1998 the Untamed Youth were nothing more than a group that regrouped for the occasional reunion gig or semi-tour, this is their most perfectly realized album. Although the group's small-combo sound is still pretty well intact, leader Derek Dickerson stretches the musical boundaries further than previous outings, making this far more than your average one-riff retro album. For a band that seldom, if ever proffers their own material, there are five originals aboard this 14-track album. Dickerson brings us the instrumental "Lightnin' Louie," "Full Blown 426 Hemi," and the quirky but very cool "Mace Has Got a Hot Rod Dart," a '90s updating of the Jan & Dean "Schlock Rod" theme. But even more intriguing are the two vocal and songwriting efforts from bass player/resident wildman Steve Mace, "They Can't Call It Beer" (a rant against everything in the beer cooler that isn't Pabst Blue Ribbon) and "Where Did Kono Go?," an ode to the bit player on Hawaii Five-O. There's still a lot of fun and irreverence on this disc, but there's a lot more music than previous outings to back it up. Think of this as the Youth's version of "Hit City '65" and it'll make perfect sense to you. ~ Cub Koda, Rovi Performers: Davie Allan - Vocals (Background); Deke Dickerson - Vocals, Piano (Electric), Guitar, Saxophone, Bass |

The Very Best of Garland Green $16.78 Chicago-based soul singer Garland Green scored his first and biggest hit in 1969 with "Jealous Kind of Fella," and it set the tone for his future recording career -- Green always seemed to be best served with a dramatic midtempo tune that gave him a chance to show off his strong, pleading voice and implore his woman to give him another chance. Unfortunately, not many of those songs connected on the charts, even though some of them were very good and featured production from the likes of Donny Hathaway, Syl Johnson, and Arif Mardin. The Very Best of Garland Green is the first career-inclusive anthology of Green's recordings, featuring material he cut for six different labels between 1969 and 1983, and if this doesn't quite make a case for him as one of the great lost artists of soul, it does make it clear that Green was more than just another journeyman R&B vocalist. The early tracks on this set are in the polished but emotionally powerful tradition of classic Chicago soul, while the later cuts show off a slicker 1970s feel; the specter of disco rears its head on "Don't Let Love Walk Out on Us" and "You Make Me Feel So Good," and "Nothing Can Take You from Me" puts Green into a more bluesy setting. Green was enough of a pro that he ably rose to the occasion no matter what material was presented to him, and there are a few lost near-classics here, especially "Plain and Simple Girl" and "He Didn't Know (He Just Kept on Talking)," the latter written by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Williams and Gary "U.S." Bonds. Garland Green is better known in the U.K. among hardcore soul fans than in the United States, and it's a shame, as The Very Best of Garland Green demonstrates that he was a powerful talent, even if he wasn't a frequent visitor to the Billboard charts. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |
